Top 26 Central Texas high school boys basketball player of the year candidates 2023-24

High school: John Jay 

Measurables: 6-7, 210

The senior forward is a double-double machine, averaging 14 points and 11 rebounds per game on 52.5 percent shooting from the field. The 6-foot-7 bruiser is also a three-star defensive lineman signed with UTEP.

High school: New Braunfels 

Measurables: 6-foot-2  

Also a three-star receiver, the two-sport star is the leading scorer for the Unicorns on the hardcourt while pacing New Braunfels with 13 points per game and one of the best teams in Region 4.

High school: San Antonio Brennan

Measurables: 6-8, 225

Flemings is the real deal at the point guard position. The four-star junior is being courted by the likes of Texas Tech, Tennessee and Houston, and is averaging nearly 18 points, five dimes and two steals per game. After leading the Bears to an appearance in the Alamodome a year ago, Flemings has led Brennan to a 20-4 overall record to date. 

High school: Lake Travis

Measurables: 6-7, 190

The athletic wing got off to a monster start to his junior season, averaging over 25 points and eight rebounds per game before going down with an injury. Greer has already eclipsed the 1,500 point mark in under three years in the Lake Travis program.  He already holds 17 offers to play at the next level. 

High school: San Marcos

Measurables: 6-5

In his first year in a Rattler uniform, the junior forward is averaging 13 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals per game.

High school: San Marcos

Measurables: 6-2, 160

The athletic combo guard is the leading scorer for the Rattlers through the first half of the season at nearly 15 points per game while shooting 35 percent from behind the arc. Jolivette is the leader for San Marcos helping pace the Rattlers to 6A District 27 contention.

High school: San Antonio Southwest 

Measurables: 6-0

McDonald is off to a great first season in the Southwest Dragons' program. He is the leading scorer on a squad that won the 5A District 28 title handily and scored 21.5 points and nine rebounds per game. 

High school: Stony Point

Measurables: 6-8, 225

The standout senior forward is off to a fast start for his final campaign in hoping to lead his Tigers to the Alamodome for a state championship. The Villanova commit is averaging 22 points  and eight rebounds per game for the No. 3 ranked team in Texas.

High school: San Antonio Stevens

Measurable: 6-3, 170

The versatile senior wing is a stat sheet-stuffer, averaging a double-double (19.5 points, 11 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game) and has played his way into several offers in the new year.

High school: Pearsall

Measurables: 6'5

Rendon is averaging nearly 22 points and 11.2 rebounds per game, and surpassing the career 1,000-point scoring mark in December.

High school: San Antonio Pieper

Measurables: 6-5

As just a sophomore, Thomas is Warriors' leader in all statistical categories — points (18.1), rebounds (10.4), assist (2.5) and steals (1.7) on a team-high 67 percent from the field.

High school: Buda Johnson

Measurables: 6-1

The senior point guard is having a great final campaign in a Jaguar uniform, scoring 17 points and six assists per game on a 56 percent shooting clip from the field and has helped the Jaguars to a top-three 6A District 26 finish alongside Lake Travis and Westlake. 

High school: Boerne-Champion

Measurables: 6-2

The Charger combo guard is certainly the senior leader for Boerne-Champion. Georgelos became the winningest Charger in school history and the school leader in career assists. 

High school: San Antonio Reagan

Measurables: 6-6

The do-it-all athletic wing is the leading scorer for the Rattlers averaging nearly 19 points and five boards per game and shoots the ball at a high efficiency — 40 percent from behind the arc.  As the unprecedented senior leader, Richard is hoping to lead his Reagan squad to a 6A District 28 championship and deep postseason run. 

High school: Stony Point

Measurables: 6-0

Buntyn is the floor general on one of the top teams in Texas — a contender for regional championship and trip to the Alamodome. The junior point guard is averaging 11.5 points on 56 percent shooting and dishes out five assists per game. 

High school: Austin St. Michaels 

Measurables: 6-7

The athletic junior forward burst onto the Texas high school basketball scene this season, leading one of the top teams in Texas with nearly 15 points and seven rebounds, two steals and a block per game. 

High school: Austin St. Michaels

Measurables: 6-6, 160

As just a sophomore, Ogden (17 points, five boards per game) is the Crusaders' leading scorer. The sophomore combo guard is a presence on both ends of the court leading St. Michaels to the TAPPS ranking for private schools across the state.

High school: Austin Westlake

Measurables: 6-0, 150 

The Tennessee commit hit eight 3s in a game this year, is a double-digit scorer in the Chaparrals' backcourt and has helped the Chaparrals, one of the top teams in Texas, win at least a share of the 6A District 26 title.

High school: Belton

Measurables: 6-6, 195

The three-star Montana State commit is the leader for the Tigers on one of the top teams in TX-5A. Johnson is a 2,000 point scorer for Belton leading the Tigers to a 23-3 record to start the season and through the first round of the district schedule, Johnson has guided the Tigers to a three-way tie in 5A, district 22 competition. 

High school: San Antonio Brennan

Measurables: 6-5

He announced himself as a freshman for one of the best teams in the state last year during the postseason. In his sophomore campaign, Ward chips in 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists per game, while shooting 60 percent from the field.

High school: Antonian Prep

Measurables: 6-3, 195

The senior wing is a walking bucket and box-score-stuffer for one of the top TAPPS teams the Lone Star State. George is averaging 22 points per game to go along with nine rebounds and nearly seven assists a game.

High school: La Vega 

Measurables: 5-9, 160

The junior point guard is the leading scorer for the 4A District 23 champions with 17 points per game, and also chips in 4.5 assists and four steals per game. 

High school: Cedar Creek 

Measurables: 5-11, 150

The senior floor general has shown that he can score points in bunches and facilitate to get his teammates involved this season. Conrad is averaging around 22 points per game season, nearly four assists and three steals per contest. 

High school: San Antonio Veterans Memorial

Measurables: 6-0, 150

A versatile playmaker, the senior has made his presence known all over the court for his Patriots' team this season. Dennis is averaging 15 points per contest and shooting around a 50 percent clip from behind the arc this year.

High school: Cedar Creek

Measurables: 6-6, 190

As the second leading scorer for the Eagles, Franklin is a big body running the court for the Eagles averaging a double-double on a nightly basis (16.7 points, 10.6 boards per game). On the defensive side of the cour , the junior forward chips in with nearly two blocks a steal per game. 

High school: Schertz-Clemens

Measureables: 6-8, 183

The senior center is a presence down low for the Buffaloes and a key reason why Clemens is one of the top teams in Region 4. He's averaging 15 points per contest and is a rebounding machine with his size on both ends.
